SCOTCH RECIPES

Original Blood and Sand

3/4 oz Scotch
3/4oz Sweet (red) vermouth
3/4 oz Cherry Liqueur (Cherry Herring or Cherry Marnier)
3/4 oz Orange juice
Shake over ice 20 -30 seconds strain and serve in chilled cocktail glass. Enjoy!

Note: This cocktail was based on the 1922 silent Rudolph Valentino movie about bullfighting. The first recording of recipe was the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book and has been featured in Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails by Ted Haigh, 2004 .

Mezcal would be more appropriate but unheard of at that time (click here for the mezcal version).

My variation is to use Maraschino liqueur which is a MUCH drier cherry liqueur, or use much more orange juice and put in a highball glass (Gary Regan's).
