Notes: Seriously crunchy organic One of the most rigorously organic (and all the other green appellations) gins out there at present. They start out with their excellent organic vodka as a base and then use a blend of the usual suspects of juniper and coriander, and a number of other botanicals- all organic and as local as possible.
Appearance: Clear, bright, limpid pool of goodness, proper touch of oiliness/viscosity to the body.On swirling nice even coat, scalloped edges, then many legs, mix of long and short, then rapidly going to droplets. When it is chilled it takes on a wonderful thick glasslike appearance even when shaken.
First Impression: Juniper, black pepper and cassia bark, with hints of citrus, coriander, anise, basil and orris root. The anise seems to have a nice leveling effect on the juniper bringing it into balance and harmony with the other ingredients.
The lovely grain body carries over from their base spirit to lend a more Genever like graininess with lots of London Dry type overtones for those seeking those types of characteristics. Rather a pine resin feel and tingle than a juniper berry on the tongue. Lingering finish of juniper, mint, coriandercitrus and whispers of black pepper. Warming end, but no burn.
Drinks: We tried the gin in martinis, gin and tonics and a few more. It is wonderful as a martini with a twist of lemon or an olive. Indeed the flavor profile is rather chameleon like in that you can easily tease out different characteristics / flavors depending on what you mix with it.
Bottle: Clear bright recycled glass, simple attractive graphics printed on recycled paper. Nice heft to the bottle and a good grade of clear glass with nice decanter base so it is solid and hard to knock over. Wooden top to natural cork so it is easy to reuse bottle for whatever potions, infusions or oils you chose to put in it. Each bottle is also hand sealed with a notation as to batch number and who bottled it - a nice touch.
Final Thoughts: One of the few organic gins available on the market, and quite tasty, to boot. Organic Nation is not only to be commended on their organic, social and environmental practices, but their gin as well. Nicely done and interesting gin. Also considering all the expense of being as crunchy organic as they are they deliver deliver an excellent gin for the money. Most people could not or would not do make they did and keep the price so low.
