Notes: A new rum that is an interesting blend of different types of rum. Blended by the venerable firm of E. A. Scheer in the Netherlands (in the rum blending business since 1723) a blanco (white, crystal, as you will). Main rums are slow fermented rums from Angostura distillery in Trinidad and Tobago, aged in used whisky and bourbon barrels for two years with a small admixture of older aged Jamaican rum. However not just a Blanco: a standard Blanco or white rum is a unaged, straight from the still product. A Reserve Blanco is an aged in wood rum that has been carbon filtered to remove color afterwards. Not your average Blanco to put it mildly.
Appearance: Perfectly clear, almost resinous sparkle with no hazing separation or floating sediments. Long legs and some droplets develop slowly on swirling.
First Impression: Slightly heavy, sweetish, caramelized molasses, stones/minerals, vanilla, tropical fruits, greek figs, whiffs of oak, char and tobacco. Spicy fruitcake floral aromas, with citrus, mace, and ginger notes.
Taste: Spicy, medium body, touch of sulfur / molasses, cardamom, figs, orris, and nutmeg. Lots of oak char/pepper, vanilla and tobacco notes. Citrus, vanilla, nutty, spicy, finish. A very complex, multilayered, rum experience.
Drinks: Damn nice mixing rum and cheap enough to use and not worry about wasting it. Complex for its age and spicy enough to stand up to other ingredients with an excellent, complex, but young bouquet to it that mixes well with other flavors to make a outstanding drink.
Cigars: A good spicy Dominican or possibly Cuban would go well with this rum Cohiba or Punch?
Bottle/Packaging: Clear glass bottle with with very simple label. Gold plastic screwcap closure. Simple package shows the clarity of the rum nicely.
Final Thoughts: A really excellent and delightful rum. About the same money as Bacardi but aged and infinitely better. Outstanding value for a blanco rum at this price . Most of the competition (in quality) cost about twice as much. Our new favorite for a white rum - especially for the price - can't beat it.
