Tequila Anejo - 1800 Reserva
1800 Tequila Reserva Anejo
Importers: Skyy Spirits,San Francisco, California
PROOF: 80 (40%)
AGE: 1-3 Years
TYPE: Tequila Anejo
PRICE: $ 30.00- 750 ML
Notes: This 1800 is aged (rested) in primarily in French oak with a small amount of American oak for up to 3 years. It is made from 100% agave. This is the higher end version, the others being 1800 Silver and 1800 Reposado.
Appearance: Deep copper/amber, leaves even coat on swirling.
First Impression: Not as aromatic as some, but much more complex than its younger siblings. Toasted cocoanut, marzipan (almond paste), vanilla (from the oak), dried orange peel, somewhat of a dry potpouri smell, hint of sea salt.
Taste: Spicy, woody, peppery, slightly thick, waxy mouth feel, dry finish.
Drinks: Margaritas of course, and Tequila Sunrises. Wood in this is a love it or hate it proposition- it can be overwhelmed by to much mixer so use a light hand.
Cigars: Natural shade wrapper.
Final Thoughts: A low end anejo which is redeemed by the price point. While it lacks the finish and complexity of higher end anejos, it also lacks the price. Simple, no frills and cheap compared to other anejos, but as much of a value as its other versions. A reasonable around the house anejo, especially if you have friends who tend to shoot their tequila rather than sip it.
Bottle: Rectangular with shaved off edges and squared off shoulders. Simple pressed glass design of stylized agave at bottom, paper labels. Squarish glass stopper with cork around glass stem (seals tightly - an important point with tequila)- assuming you are keeping the bottle for a while. Moderately heavy glass large square bottom and short silhouette make it a hard to tip over bottle.
