Heavy Water actually tastes like something other than grain alcohol and little else.
Notes: This vodka is produced in Sweden (land of vikings, Ikea, Lute Fisk, and aquavit, among other things). A vodka crafted with winter wheat and using water directly from a deep aquifer to bring the vodka down to 80 proof. Unlike many spirits these days, they do not use distilled, deionized, designer water so Heavy Water actually tastes like something other than grain alcohol and little else.
Appearance: Faultlessly clear, on swirling, it leaves a thin clear coat on the inside of the glass which then scallops developing legs and droplets.
First Impression: Creamy spinach/vegetal notes, vanilla, crème soda, zest, slightly spicy, slight marzipan/almomds. Nice mineral body to it.
Taste: Slightly oily mouth feel on the tongue, mild bite to it on the edges of your tongue. Very nice grain taste with a fleeting sweetness, then dry, turning a touch sweet, then on to a drier, long finish.
Drinks: Excellent martini that stands up to an olive or twist. Great all around for all the drinks we tried it on. Makes a wonderful bone dry vodka and tonic. A vodka for adults who want to TASTE the vodka they are using – not some flavorless soulless grain alcohol.
NOTE: Use Noilly Prat, and keep the vermouth refrigerated after opening for the best taste.
Bottle: Thick squat cylindrical decanter of thick clear glass with a slightly rounded off shoulder. Cap and closure gives it a heavy metal appearance with the label being a tube in the middle of the bottle that looks like a anode used to extract Deuterium (D20 aka Heavy Water) looks more like labware than a vodka bottle – which makes it easy to spot.
Final Thoughts: A very well made vodka with a good backbone of taste to it- unlike many on the market today. While a touch pricey in the premium category it is actually cheap for the ultra premium segment.
