When you feel like hurting yourself now and later….

Notes: Hornitos (the brand is named for the Spanish for the clay ovens agave is traditionally used to roast agaves for distillation) Reposado is aged (rested) in American oak barrels (we suspect recycled Jim Beam barrels) for 2 months and is made from 100% agave- which is unusual for this this price- most of the tequila you find at this price (and certainly below) is NOT 100% agave but blended tequila- the stuff that all those college tequila stories are made of. Other versions are the Hornitos Silver and Hornitos Anejo.

Appearance: Light straw yellow, fairly pale, leaves a very thin even coat on swirling wth some legs forming.

First Impression: Not overly aromatic, almost a tired bouquet with sea salt and slightly antiseptic smell. Notes of that bitter waxy coating of agave lurk in the background.

Taste: Cilantro, alkali tang, black pepper, green peppers, slightly thick, waxy mouth feel; dry, somewhat bitter finish.

Drinks: Margaritas of course, and Tequila Sunrises. Cheap enough to use and not worry about. As a shot, it goes down with a burn but what are you expecting?

Cigars: Fuente Curlyheads or maybe White Owls.

Final Thoughts: Not many. It tastes like a relatively cheap tequila – but not extremely so. The aging kind of makes it taste tired rather than improving it. It does not smell or taste as much like kerosene as some of the other cheapers tequilas we have had. It just strikes us a raw, a bit tired and not overly well made. The kind of tequila you want when you are in some kind of macho self harm mode- like when the dog died or your girlfriend ran off- and want to drink raw spirits that hurt now and later.

Bottle: Rectangular bottle with curved slightly concave waist, shaved off edges and rounded off shoulders. Simple pressed glass design of stylized agave at sholder, paper labels .Screw cap closure and neck seal. Slightly heavy glass bottom and short silhouette make it a hard to tip over bottle.
