Notes: Kahlúa is pretty much the dominant coffee liqueur in the world and enjoys being the ingredient for drinks such as the Black Russian or the ubiquitous Kahlúa and Coffee dessert drink (or breakfast depending). This is the original version, there are now a number of different flavors out there also that we have reviewed including, French Vanilla, Hazelnut,Mocha and the latest, Kahlúa and Cream. Kahlúa is made from 100% arabica beans and all their coffee is roasted and processed in Veracruz, Mexico allowing them total control over the roasting and processing of all the coffee going into all their Kahlúa products

First Impression: Coffee notes with cinnamon and slight vanilla and alkali notes, caramel sweetness alcohol is very much in background.

Appearance: Pleasing transparent bronze / caramel color, dark but not opaque, on swirling leaves an even, somewhat thick coat on the glass with some legs developing.

Taste: Sweet, creamy / oily mouth feel intense coffee, first with a cinnamon bite with vanilla and caramel/caramelized sugar overtones. Only mild alcohol aftertaste, smooth and sweet with long sweet lingering finish.

Drinks: We found all of their proprietary recipes to be excellent, and any number of recipes on the web for drinking and cooking. It is one of our standard ingredients for our milkshake version of a Toasted Almond.

Bottle: Dark brown glass bottle (somewhat bullet shaped) that is almost iconic – immediately identifiable as Kahlúa with the gold and red labels, red ribbon and coffee colored wax “K” seal on shoulder.

Final Thoughts: As stated earlier pretty much the industry standard by which others are judged. Yes, there are better ones out there – depending on your personal preferences in particular on what facets of taste/flavor profiles you prefer, but few can beat them on price and none on availability. Like a chain restaurant, it’s always there and you know what you are getting every time, and your guests always recognize it – no need to convince them. Also very hard to argue with the price – good quality and by far the low cost option in most cases.
