A outstanding and organic vodka at the price were many are not either organic or outstanding – merely over marketed.
Notes: This Vodka is produced from organic rye, wheat and corn from local sources and organically fermented. Seriously crunchy organic. One of the most rigorously organic (and all the other green appellations) vodkas out there at present – which is an accomplishment considering the rapidly growing competition.
Appearance: Crystal clear, no sediment whatsoever. On swirling it leaves a thin clear oily coat (sign of nice body)on the inside of the glass with a rapidly developing scalloped edge with some long legs developing and lots of small droplets rather than receding altogether. Viscous look and feel.
First Impression: Clean distillate smell, a touch sweet, with nice graininess to it. No smell of esters or oils; clean grain spirit. After a bit it develops a some nice vanilla and cocoa alkali notes mixed with sweetness.
Taste: Slightly oily on the tongue, attractively oily body/mouthfeel, medium body. Creamy, mild bite to it on the center of your tongue. Sweet, almost vanilla notes, then switching to a mild cocoa. Traces of a grain-like aftertaste with a smooth warmth. Eminently smooth and drinkable.
Drinks: The martini was excellent. In other drinks, it proved to be very versatile and more subtle than a number of other vodkas. In all drinks the rather unique mashbill lent more structure and backbone than most vodkas. NOTE: Use Noilly Prat and keep the vermouth refrigerated after opening for the best taste.
Bottle: Rectangular clear glass bottle with rounded edges and shoulder. Clear plastic labels with silk screened print on front and back show off the purity of the vodka to good effect. The glass bottle is made form a good grade of glass so you can reuse it for whatever you like, vase, candle holder etc., the heavy decanter glass bottom makes for a nice presentation and stability. Another plus is that the labels are easily removable so you can reuse the bottle for whatever (oils, infusions, etc.) with a minimum of fuss and effort. Real cork stopper gives it a nice feel (a screw cap detracts from a premium presentation in my mind).
Final Thoughts: A outstanding and organic vodka at the price were many are not either organic or outstanding – merely over marketed. The complexity and balance the three different organic grains bring to the vodka and the skill of the distilling make for an excellent and responsible alternative to the industrial and ordinary.
Good simple web site easy navigation, simple and straightforward with good information if a touch sparse on some points (production, bottle and label recycled content etc) .
