A lovely 12 year old that is complex and not too sweet.
Notes: Distilled in Barbados in the Caribbean.
Appearance: Deep bronze/copper in the bottle. Sparkling copper gold color, clear with no hazing separation or floating sediments. Long legs and crenellated edges develop on swirling.
First Impression: Slightly sweetish, caramelized molasses, spice and flowers, nutty, but drying nose, lean.
Taste: Spicy, sweetish, some muted flower notes, medium-bodied. Nutty, spicy, hint of leather, and drying finish with nice dryness and warmth to it (but not overly so or in a negative way).
Drinks: You really should enjoy this one straight up or on the rocks if you must use ice (no self respecting sailor would) and if you really must. . . it works well in most rum drinks. Assertive enough for a classic rum cocktail (Please don’t drown it in some umbrella drink!) but doesn’t overpower the mix.
Cigars: Any decent cigar will do – like a La Gloria Cubana or Hoyo de Monterrey.
Bottle/Packaging: Short antique type bell shaped clear glass bottle with wrap around paper label with red ping and drawing of Rooster (in red). Black neck foil, faux cork closure keeps the rum safe in any position. Nice minimalist package. Clear glass shows off the color of the rum nicely.
Final Thoughts: A excellent choice if you are looking for a more complex rum but don’t want anything that is too rich such as a Guatemalan or Venezuelan rum. Well made and well worth the money – try finding a spirit of similar age and quality in any other category..
