An adult ginger liqueur-finally !

Notes: The first certified organic and Kosher (pareve) liqueurs in the United States, Loft Liqueurs is creating a high standard in a sector of the drinks trade that otherwise seems to swim to the bottom when it comes its willingness to use cheap chemicals, sweeteners and artificial colors.

Using local, organic and biodynamically grown ingredients and organic agave syrup as sweetener, with no artificial colorings of preservatives it seems to be for people with taste, conscience, and concerned about what they are introducing to their bodies. They use the freshest local organic products and a new propriety system that surrounds and buffers the alcohol with water making for a smoother taste and better flavor integration.

The series includes Lemongrass Cello, Lime Cello,Tangerine Cello andLavender Cello (“cello” from the Italian variety of liqueurs).

AppearanceBright, silvery appearance, color is very slightly translucent, a little like a aloe vera gel. No separation, which is a neat trick given the complexity of the ingredients and getting them all to stay together. Light, even coating on the glass with legs and droplets forming.

First Impression: Earthy and aromatic at the same time with vegetal, spicy and citrus notes with hints of ginger bark, galangal and pepper.

Taste: Sweetish entry with appropriate heat/spice early on with a nice fade. Sweet, ginger and pepper/alkali with mineal notes. Understated, but definite ginger presence without being overdone or to sweet and cloying. The agave makes it sweet without being saccahrine or sticky like corn syrup does. Very smooth with a medium body and mouthfeel pleasant finish but not overly long (see below).

Drinks: Recipes on the website give some good ideas and directions to go in on your own. My suggestion is to use it instead of nutmeg or pepper in some drinks (make a unique Brandy Alexander, for instance) also makes for a intersting addition to some beers as a spice component.

Bottle: Frosted glass bottle with rounded shoulders and flared bottom. Silver neck wrap and a composite cork (better seal if a touch unromantic). Bamboo tree free paper label.

Final Thoughts: Ginger liqueur for adults. Not too much ginger heat and not a ginger syrup that clings like the scent of grim death like a number of others I could think of. A very nice product that is well made and has a wonderful flavor profile.
