Notes: This rum is part of the Planteray lines of rum  (Original Dark,  Overproof 63%, XO 2oth Anniversary,  Mauritius 2013, Isle of Fiji, Sealander, , Barbados 5 Year Old, Belize 2008.Xamaca, Cut and Dry Coconut Rum, Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Rum Original 1824 Recipe, Canerock Spiced Rum, Planteray 3 Stars White Rum, the Overproof 69% O.F.T.D, and this,  the Monymusk White Overproof Jamaica Rum,  among  others  by the cognac house of Pierre Ferrand. This is part of a rebranding of the rum lines for the Pierre Ferrand Cognac house, which has also produced the Mathilde Liqueurs such as the Peach which we reviewed earlier, along with a Peach, Pear, Black Currant, Raspberry, and Orange XO. Their products also include Citadelle Gin, Citadelle Reserve Gin, Citadelle Rouge Gin, Citadelle Jardin D Été Gin, Citadelle Vive Le Cornichon Gin, Citadelle Vodka, Magellan Gin, and a host of other spirits. Alexandre Gabriel  the head of Pierre Ferrand is constantly blending and experimenting with new products as both an enthusiasm/hobby and also to develop new products. I highly recommend visiting the distillery  if you get a chance – it is a delight to both the eye and the palette.

This is a Jamaican molasses based rum from the Monymusk Plantationwhich dates from 1755, It is a blend of both pot and column still rums and is not aged.

Appearance: Clear, almost quicksilver appearance. On swirling other leaves a thin oily coating on the glass that forms a few tears on the edgeline with a jagged line of spirit retreating back to the bottom of the glass.No separation of the spirit.

First Impression: Cane/Grass notes to start with fair amount of fruity esters of banana,tropical fruit and some slight under funk to it. Only a slight hint that tis overproof- the spirit is nicely subdued compared to some spirits of similar proof and well integrated.

Taste: Slightly oily medium to light entry on the tongue with a small touch of sweetness an then an alkali type drying. Mildly fruity with grassy and mineral notes. Notes of one,coconut,tropical fruit and touch of sweetness.

Drinks: A great rum for both sipping as a example of a Jamaican rum and also for any rum drink that calls for a white or an unaged rum.

You should of course factor in the higher proof for mixing, taste, and proportions.Also do not smoke aroundd this rum ( or at least carefully) It is flammable !

Bottle: Relatively basic sort of packaging but in a charming slightly retro kind of way. Nice of a still set up on the front label and simple but attractive graphics draw the eye and stand out on a store or bar shelf.Back label offers a few notes on the rum. Red aluminum screw cap closure completes the package with a simple touch.

Other: A nice alternative for an overproof rum,There aren’t too many out there anymore more and a lot of

Final Thoughts: An Interesting and complex white rum and quite nice as an overproof rum.A lot of overproof rums are not nearly as complex and lack the depth and character that this one exhibits. Well done !
