An interesting and flavorful Older rum at an attractive price.

Notes: This is an interesting rum just for the fact Mauritius is not a common or well known area for remand it represents a chance to try a totally unexplored terroir for most people. That and the fact to is sourced by a firm known for sourcing great quality rum at excellent prices and its extended aging is icing on the cake !

Here is a list of the drier and geeky facts and specifications on this very particular rum;

Fermentation of 2 days,  Column still, Tropical aging in 200 liter ( read 53 gallon) bourbon casks for 9 years with a further aging in 350 Liter Pierre Ferrand Cognac casks in Cognac, France. Volatile compounds 278 grams per hectoliter, Esters 69grams per Hectoliter. Dosage of 4.5 grams per liter (about 1/4 oz per quart very roughly for metric challenged Americans) Production was limited to 19 casks.

Appearance: Clear, very light old tan in color Light oily coating in glass when swirling, distinct meniscus/edgeline forming with multiple tears forming and a few legs.

First Impression: Briny, Oceanic influence with molasses, dried orange peel, figs, cardamom dried fruit,

Taste: Caramel molasses entry of medium weight, tropical fruit, papaya, curaçao orange notes, black tea, lemon zest, preserved Vietnamese banana notes, with sight honeyed notes. Finish is long, slightly alkali, and a touch metallic with hints of pu err tea Dried orange peel, caramelized sugars, persimmons or medjool dates, slight grassiness, alkali/volcanic minerality, Vietnamese cinnamon, citrus

Drinks: Wrks well in both Tiki and more , shall we say, conventional rum cocktails. Also a contender for crossover/substitutions in various whisk(e)y cocktails , Rye, Irish and some Scotch cocktails in particular ( try it in a Blood and Sand variation, or a Japanese Highball ).

Bottle: Being part of the “Vintage Series   Limited Edition” series this bottle design blends elements of the Planteray companies signature ratafia netting, their overall bottle color schemes/aesthetic, and adds unique elements such as the taller, more cylindrical bottle with a longer, slightly bulbous neck, a more weighted glass foot/bottom,  and a clear neck capsule along with a slightly more lux cork and top.

Other: This rum is part of the Planteray lines of rum  (Original Dark,  Overproof 63%, XO 2oth Anniversary,  Isle of Fiji, Sealander, , Barbados 5 Year Old, the Belize 2008, Xamaca, Cut and Dry Coconut Rum, the Overproof 69% O.F.T.D, Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Rum Original 1824 Recipe, Canerock Spiced Rum, Planteray 3 Stars White Rum, the Monymusk White Overproof Jamaica Rum, and this the Mauritius 2013, among  others  by the cognac house of Pierre Ferrand. This is part of a rebranding of the rum lines for the Pierre Ferrand Cognac house, which has also produced the Mathilde Liqueurs such as the Peach which we reviewed earlier, along with a Pear, Black Currant, Raspberry, and Orange XO. Their products also include Citadelle Gin, Citadelle Reserve Gin, Citadelle Rouge Gin, Citadelle Jardin D Été Gin, Citadelle Vive Le Cornichon Gin, Citadelle Vodka, Magellan Gin, and a host of other spirits. Alexandre Gabriel  the head of Pierre Ferrand is constantly blending and experimenting with new products as both an enthusiasm/hobby and also to develop new products. I highly recommend visiting the distillery  if you get a chance – it is a delight to both the eye and the palette.

Final Thoughts: A complex and intriguing rum from a far away land and goût de terroir  that most people have not encountered

Website: www.https://.Planterayrum.com

Overall an excellent website if a bit light on some information. The Specifications sheets are useful links on the individual rum pages but overall just as not derailed as some other rum websites we have seen. Good general information but the search functions and trying to find which category a particular rum comes under can be frustrating !
